The new Maxima is 2.2 inches longer than its predecessor, which makes it 1.3 inches longer than the Altima sedan. A greater use of high-strength steel means that the new car has lost 82 pounds compared to the last Maxima despite its increase in size. The interior is roomier than before, and features higher-quality materials like optional Ascot quilted leather, constrasting stitching for the seats, and Alcantara inserts in the sport-oriented SR trim. The center console is angled toward the driver, and a NissanConnect infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen is standard.
The ubiquitous Nissan 3.5-liter V-6 is the sole engine choice for the 2016 Nissan Maxima, gaining 10 hp for a total of 300 hp, while torque is unchanged at 261 lb-ft. This engine still routes power through a continuously variable transmission to the front wheels, though the CVT has been retuned to provide artificial “D-step” shift points during acceleration. Highway fuel economy also improves to an estimated 30 mpg.
Offered in S, SL, SR, and Platinum trims, the 2016 Nissan Maxima will carry a $1,120 higher starting price of $33,235 when it goes on sale this summer. The sporty SR trim is new to the Maxima, and adds 19-inch wheels and upgraded tires, a sport-tuned suspension with stiffer damping and a larger front stabilizer bar, paddle shifters for the CVT, and aluminum sport pedals. The uplevel SL and Platinum trims will also offer options like a panoramic sunroof, a Bose audio system, and active-safety features
