2016 Volkswagen Passat Priced at $23,260, New R-Line at $24,795

Despite all of the craziness going on at Volkswagen surrounding its ugly diesel emissions scandal, the company is still selling cars. Today it revealed full pricing information for the 2016 Volkswagen Passat, which will remain unchanged at $23,260 (with a six-speed automatic transmission) despite more standard equipment. Manual-transmission models start at $22,160, both prices including destination.

The base Passat S comes with a 1.8-liter 170-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 184 lb-ft of torque. EPA fuel-economy ratings for the 2016 Volkswagen Passat also rise by 2 mpg on the highway and 1 mpg in the city, with total ratings of 25/38/29 mpg city/highway/combined.

Standard equipment on the base 2016 Volkswagen Passat S includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, a backup camera, the company’s MIB II infotainment with a 5-inch touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control, and automatic post-collision braking. According to VW, the new equipment adds up to $1,315 in value compared to what came standard on the 2015 model. A lighting package that adds LED foglights, daytime running lights, headlights, and taillights is available for $1,245.

The new $24,795 Passat R-Line takes a sportier approach, adding 19-inch wheels, more aggressive rocker sills, a rear diffuser, and contrasting black trim. An R-Line lighting package similar to the one available for the base Passat S costs $1,095, while an R-Line comfort package adds heated front seats, heated mirrors and washer nozzles, leatherette seating, and a power driver’s seat for $775.

Better equipment becomes available with the 2016 Volkswagen Passat SE, which comes in at $27,640. A sunroof, heated front seats, power driver’s seat, leather seating surfaces. and 17-inch wheels all come with the SE. Tech-wise, a larger 6.3 inch infotainment screen with CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a second USB port, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all part of the package, as well. For even more there is the SE w/technology at $29,230, slapping on blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry with push-button start, rear cross-traffic alert, navigation, and heated rear seats.

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat SEL starts at $31,315, including the SE’s equipment plus premium Fender audio, a rear-seat pass-through, Vienna leather, 18-inch wheels, and stainless steel pedal caps. The SEL Platinum is $35,090, adding a standard lighting package, remote start, parking assistant, lane-keep assist, and active blind-spot steering correction.

King of the 2016 Volkswagen Passat kingdom is the V6 SEL Premium, which adds stainless steel exhaust tips and shift paddles along with VW’s 280-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Total price for the V6 SEL Premium is a heady $37,655.

The new Passat reaches dealers this fall, although the TDI models have been delayed until a fix is made for their emissions systems.
