2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class pickup spy shots

Mercedes-Benz is working on the first full redesign of its G-Class since the nameplate’s launch almost four decades ago.

So far we’ve seen spy shots of prototypes for the standard SUV and high-performance Mercedes-AMG model. Today we have the first shots of what’s likely to be a pickup truck model.

This may look like one of the many prototypes for the standard SUV (shown below) but if you look closely at the rear section you’ll notice a horizontal line that appears to be the top of a pickup’s tailgate. Above this appears to be a makeshift canopy fitted to fool onlookers into thinking the vehicle is an SUV. We can also make out the edge of a rear door, so this is likely a dual cab pickup that we’re looking at.

The current G-Class offers single and dual cab pickup body styles, though these tend to be commercial- or military-spec models. The fact that the prototype is heavily camouflaged could indicate that it is a new luxury-oriented pickup along the lines of the former Cadillac Escalade EXT. If bound for the United States, it may explain why Mercedes has ruled out bringing over its new X-Class pickup truck.

The redesigned G-Class is expected to debut in late 2017 or early the following year. Compared to the current model, it will have a wider body and corresponding wider track to accommodate new suspension that aims to improve stability on and off the road while also improving interior space. At the same time, the body will be shorter, helping to lower the center of gravity.

Another key change should be the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steel in the construction to help reduce weight. And there could possibly be some alternative powertrains this time around.
