Next-Generation Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Caught Out for Testing Again

While the world’s attention is focused on the 2015 Frankfurt auto show, our spy photographers have captured something interesting of a more American variety. Out for testing on a track wearing just a simple visual camouflage wrap is the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 stretching its legs in the rain.

Shown here with much less camouflage than in previous spy photos, the new Camaro ZL1 looks to sets itself apart from the SS with aggressive visual modifications, including a larger rear wing, widened side rocker panels and fenders, and a wider intake on the front grille.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Spied Rear Track1

The 2012-2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was a performance powerhouse, with 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8 engine. This was the same LSA lifted from the second-generation Cadillac CTS-V, which in turn sourced its V-8 heart from the mighty 638-hp LS9 V-8 from the 2011-2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

This whole family sharing program bodes well for this upcoming ZL1, as we have a more powerful supercharged powertrain to work with. If the past formula is anything to go by, the new ZL1 will most likely see a variant of the supercharged LT4 found under the hood of both the new 2016 Cadillac CTS-V and the wicked 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. In CTS-V trim, the supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 puts out an astounding 640 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque, a sizeable and realistic bump for the upcoming ZL1.

Magnetic ride control should reappear on the new Camaro ZL1 as well, since the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS on which the ZL1 is based upon comes with magnetic ride as an option. Brakes are set to be beefier as well, with more stopping power to reign in all of the additional thrust.
