Following a clean-sheet redesign for the 2013 model year, the Mitsubishi Outlander
crossover receives a host of exterior and interior refreshes for the 2016 model year. Now, the Outlander features the first implementation of Mitsubishi’s new “Dynamic Shield” front-end design, set to become the new face of the Mitsubishi brand going forward.
This new look incorporates a new two-bar grille design with a large gloss-black grille insert below that’s flanked by curved chrome trim pieces that run into the foglight surrounds. The front fenders have also been redesigned, with reshaped headlights and daytime running lights. A fresh set of new 18-inch wheels are now standard, along with a redesigned rear fascia with revised LED taillights.
The interior of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander gets a makeover as well, with a redesigned steering wheel and a new infotainment interface. Changes to all trim levels include revised seats, updated door-panel trim, and some new trim and materials for the dashboard and console. The range-topping 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander GT model also gains new equipment, including power-folding mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer, and optional LED headlights.
Mitsubishi also fettled with the suspension and transmission to ensure the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander
drives a fresh as it looks. 2016 brings a retuned suspension with different damping, revised electric power steering, and a continuously-variable transmission with revised software. A big focus was put on making the Outlander quieter and more refined as well, with thicker rear glass, increased sound insulation, and improved weatherstripping.
There’s no official word on what powertrains will be offered, but we expect the current Outlander’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder and the 3.0-liter V-6 engines to carry over into 2016. Mitsubishi also said it would add a plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander to its lineup, but that model has been delayed multiple times for the U.S. market.
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander makes its official debut at the 2015 New York auto show. Look for more details and photos as we get closer to its on-sale date later this year.
