2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Spied with Sportier Design

Though Subaru won’t reveal the concept version of the next-generation Subaru Impreza until later this month in Tokyo, our spy photographers caught a prototype of the production car testing in California. The car is wearing a fair bit of camouflage, but there’s plenty of resemblance between the prototype and the recent teaser sketches of the Impreza 5-Door concept, sharing its lower and wider stance along with updated fascias front and rear.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is set to use a new design language for the company. As such, the Impreza’s front end looks to take on a more aggressive appearance, with swept-back headlights and a more prominent grille in a pentagonal shape. The profile adopts more of a wedge-like shape, with the beltline rising along the rear door for a slightly sportier greenhouse. Around back, the tailgate is a bit more sharply raked, and the wraparound taillights make the car look wider than before. A glimpse into the interior shows a redesigned steering wheel with a round hub, along with what looks like a version of Subaru’s Starlink touchscreen infotainment interface.

Few mechanical details are known at this point, but the 2017 Subaru Impreza is said to ride on Subaru’s new modular platform, which will of course accommodate a standard all-wheel-drive system. A four-cylinder boxer engine will remain, though it should receive some updates over the current Impreza’s 2.0-liter unit for improved power and efficiency.

After the upcoming Subaru Impreza 5-Door concept debuts later this month at the 2015 Tokyo auto show, look for the production car to arrive sometime in late 2016 as a 2017 model. In the meantime, check out the gallery of spy photos below.
