A new generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is just around the corner, and today we have our first unmasked look at the SUV’s interior.

German website Mercedes-Fans has posted several shots that provide us with a good look at the new cabin design for Mercedes’ latest mid-size models.

The dashboard features the now familiar dual-screen design, though now the screens appear to float in front of the dash instead of being encased in a frame integrated with the dash, like in the E-Class.

We also see that the design has adopted a rectangular shape for the air vents instead of the circular design currently used, and the center console adopts a smartphone-like screen serving as the main controller for the infotainment system. That infotainment system should be the new MBUX system already introduced in Mercedes’ latest generation of compacts.

The overall look is a major step up from the outdated design of the current GLE, which actually goes all the way back to the M-Class introduced for 2012.

Unfortunately there are no specs to go along with the leaked shots. We know the new GLE will be the second model to ride on Mercedes’ MHA platform for SUVs sized from the GLC up (excluding the G-Class). The platform is closely related to Mercedes’ MRA platform found in most of the automaker’s sedans and coupes and made its debut in the GLC. A redesigned GLS is also in the works.

Powertrains should include Mercedes’ latest inline-4 and -6 engines plus a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 reserved for the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 variant. Diesel and plug-in hybrid options should also be on offer, though the former isn’t likely to make it to the United States due to the fallout from the Volkswagen Group’s diesel emissions scandal. A nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive should be standard on most models in the range.

For the exterior, our spy shots of prototypes show a more aggressive, more muscular design. This is highlighted by the vehicle’s wide hips and large intakes in the front fascia.

Look for the new GLE to make its debut late this year. An appearance at the 2018 Los Angeles auto show this November is a strong possibility. Concurrent with the development, Mercedes is also working on a redesign of the GLE Coupe. Look for this model to trail the new GLE by about a year.
