5 Cool Features on the 2016 Lexus RX

The Lexus RX kicked off the luxury SUV craze in the late 1990s, and with its latest redesign, Lexus is looking to push the envelope even further. With the market saturated with competitors, the 2016 Lexus RX is updated with much more aggressive styling to help it stand out. The RX also boasts some cool new technology and convenience features that should continue to make it a premium, family-hauling favorite. Until the RX goes on sale later this year, here are some of its coolest visual and equipment upgrades.

1. Lexus Safety System+

Well-to-do families have loved the RX since its inception, so it makes sense for the 2016 Lexus RX to put a big focus on safety. The suite of safety technology in Lexus Safety System+ includes pre-collision automatic braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic and adaptive high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera. Lexus also improved target detection for its Dynamic Radar Cruise Control that incorporates full-stop capability. Best of all? Lexus chief Jeff Bracken says that the whole safety enchilada is going to cost just $650.

2. Screens Galore

New on the RX is the largest display screen ever on a Lexus. The massive 12.3-inch monitor, elegantly integrated into the center stack, features a full-screen map and is controlled by an updated version of Lexus’ Remote Touch infotainment controller. There’s also a new heads-up display that projects important driver information onto the windshield, while rear-seat passengers will be enthralled with dual 11.6-inch screens, mounted to the back of the front-seat headrests.

3. The Power of Convenience

Lexus listened to its customers with some of its latest convenience upgrades to the RX. Anyone who had difficulty opening the rear liftgate before can rest easy thanks to the new touchless activator. All you have to do is briefly hover your hand over the Lexus badge on the rear end, and up goes the liftgate door. Other updates include a one-touch panoramic roof, as well as keyless entry touchpoints on the rear doors as well as the front.

4. Bigger Wheels, Bigger Personality

A lot of people like to knock the old RX for being boring, but love it or hate it, the 2016 Lexus RX is a lot more interesting to behold. There are a ton of sharper lines and more aggressive styling points, but one of the coolest might be the new wheels. Replacing the old 19-inch wheels are brawnier 20-inchers on bigger tires, and you can even option them up with body-color matching inserts.

5. Wear-Friendly Rubber

Lexus RX buyers are not in the enthusiast crowd, and might not be as attentive to things like tire wear as your average gearhead. That’s where Michelin comes in, with their Premier tires and EverGrip technology. Available on the RX, these EverGrip tires are designed with a special tread pattern and compound to continue gripping in both dry and wet, even when it’s worn.
