A new photo of an upcoming limited edition McLaren has leaked on Instagram today. The car, identified as either the MSO HS or the 688 HS, is one of a limited edition of 25 bespoke cars based on the Super Series, which includes the 650S and 675LT. HS stands for High Sport.
We first got a look at the car back in May. Now we can confirm a few of its details.
The 688 comes from the car’s 688 ps horsepower, which translates to 679 American horses. The additional 13 horsepower over the 675LT comes from blueprinting the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine and porting and polishing the heads.
The car is built by the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) team, which is a skunk works that can build bespoke cars. It was requested by a customer and MSO chose to make 25 available to offset the cost of development.

Some of the cars will make it to the United States, but the run of 25 has already been sold out. Despite this car’s burnt orange paint, each car will feature its own exterior color and interior colors and materials. With so much personalization available, McLaren isn’t giving a price, but you can bet it will be considerably more than the 675LT’s $353,600 base price.
In addition to the engine upgrades, the car features a unique exterior aero kit, including what appears to be elements from the McLaren P1 GTR. Together, these changes make the MSO HS the ultimate expression of the Super Series cars.
According to McLaren, the cars are already being built, and this customer car is the first one. The others will follow as MSO completes them. We expect to get more information from McLaren when the next car is ready.
A debut during next week’s Monterey Car Week is a strong possibility. For more from the event, head to our dedicated hub.
