Hyundai’s newly minted Genesis luxury brand is wasting no time rolling out its range of new models. The range-topping Genesis G90 sedan shown in these official renderings will be the first of six new models when it debuts next month in Korea.
The G90 is essentially a replacement for the current Hyundai Equus sedan, which has been sold in the U.S. since 2010. As the Equus was built on a previous-generation Hyundai Genesis sedan platform, look for this new model to use a stretched version of the current-generation Hyundai Genesis’ platform. The 5.0-liter V-8 engine from that car is also a likely choice for the G90’s powertrain. The Genesis sedan itself, which is smaller than the Equus/G90, will also soon join the Genesis range when it is renamed G80.
According to these renderings, the G90 looks to adopt a much more modern appearance to bring it in line with the Genesis brand’s new design identity, called “Athletic Elegance.” The front end is strikingly similar to the current Hyundai Genesis sedan with its large hexagonal grille flanked by swept-back, LED-accented headlights. The G90’s profile, though, appears significantly longer and more stately, which is fitting considering the G90 will look to compete with other full-size luxury sedans like the Lexus LS and BMW 7 Series.
We can safely assume, then, that the Genesis G90’s back seat will offer all sorts of sumptuous accommodations for those who prefer to be driven. Hyundai also says it will offer all sorts of safety and convenience features with a focus on “human-centered technology.”
Genesis has not yet announced plans for a dealer network separate from Hyundai, so it’s likely that the first Genesis models will be sold through existing Hyundai dealers in the U.S. Along with North America, the Genesis brand will initially launch in South Korea, China, and the Middle East before later expanding to Europe and Asia. Along with the G90 and G80, Genesis plans to launch four other new models, including two SUVs, by 2020.
