The Lamborghini Urus will be built in Italy, and the company’s first SUV after the LM002 will launch in 2018. That means the first owners will take delivery of their Lamborghini SUV roughly six years after the Urus first debuted as a concept car at the 2012 Beijing auto show.
Lamborghini reportedly asked the Italian government for tax breaks, and says that it will expand its existing Sant’Agata Bolognese facility thanks in part to the support of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. Lamborghini plans to spend “hundreds of millions of Euros” to expand its Sant’Agata plant, which will entail the addition of a new manufacturing line and the hiring of about 500 new employees.
The Lamborghini Urus is expected to see its largest sales in the U.S., China, the Middle East, the U.K., Germany, and Russia, the company said, with annual volumes expected to be about 3,000 units. That would more than double Lamborghini’s typical annual sales; in 2014 the exotic automaker sold 2,530 cars worldwide.
The Lamborghini Urus, shown here at the 2012 Beijing show, will be a 2+2 crossover that will use a modular Volkswagen Group platform shared with the next Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q8. Although it could borrow the V-10 engine from the Lamborghini Huracan or the V-12 engine from the Aventador, recent reports indicate the Urus could feature a twin-turbo V-8.
