Next Volkswagen Tiguan Teased, Heading to Frankfurt Show

Ahead of its planned debut at the Frankfurt auto show, VW has released a teaser of the new Volkswagen Tiguan. The crossover debuting at Frankfurt will be the European version of the Tiguan, which will be built at the company’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany.

Our previous spy shots of the Volkswagen Tiguan have indicated the crossover will take on sportier proportions, by and large mimicking the shape of the Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE concept that was revealed at the 2015 Detroit show. Expect to see a slanted rear windshield, a gently sloping roofline, updated exterior styling cues, a slightly larger footprint, and an overhauled interior.

We know that the next Volkswagen Tiguan will ride on the same MQB platform as the Golf, Audi TT, and Audi A3. VW has also confirmed that its plant in Puebla, Mexico will shoulder U.S.-bound Tiguan production. Volkswagen had already said that it will begin production of a three-row, long-wheelbase Tiguan in Mexico, aimed at the U.S. market.

Engine offerings will likely mirror those of the Golf. That means a 1.8-liter turbo-four gas engine as the base offering, and 2.0-liter turbodiesel and 2.0-liter turbo-four engines higher up the ladder. Both front- and all-wheel drive will be available, the latter a Haldex 5 setup cribbed from the Golf R.
The Volkswagen Tiguan has been built primarily in Wolfsburg, Germany since 2007, shipping 1.6 million units. The remaining 1.04 million units came from VW’s Chinese and Russian facilities.

This latest Volkswagen SUV will point the way forward for the brand’s styling, which will be reflected in other upcoming SUVs such as the MLB-based Touraeg successor.

According to a VW spokesperson, more details are on the way in the lead-up to the Tiguan’s Frankfurt reveal.
