Behold the future of Porsche: a 600-hp, all-wheel-drive, all-electric super sedan that’s a clear competitor to the Tesla Model S. Called the Porsche Mission E, this striking new concept car debuts at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show with a futuristic, 911-inspired design inside and out and an innovative electrified drivetrain.
Lest you think that this is some eco-friendly special, Porsche is quick to point out that performance is the name of the game with the Mission E’s new drivetrain. Using two electric motors similar to those in the Porsche 919 hybrid race car, the Mission E has over 600 hp to power all four wheels, and rockets from 0-62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds. All-wheel steering and torque vectoring are included for sharp handling, and Porsche says that the EV can even lap the Nurburgring in less than 8 minutes.
The Porsche Mission E concept’s battery pack is mounted in the underbody for a low center of gravity, like in a Tesla Model S. An 800-volt electrical system enables quicker charging, with a “Porsche Turbo Charging” system able to charge the batteries from empty to 80 percent full in around 15 minutes. Total range is estimated at 310 miles.
The low-slung super sedan looks much sleeker than the current Panamera, and incorporates many cues from today’s Porsche models. The Mission E concept’s low nose reminds us of the 911, while matrix LED headlights with four elements each are similar to those in the 918 Spyder hypercar. A wide, thin taillight strip stretches across the rear, and wide haunches give the car an athletic stance. On the inside, there is space for four passengers, and an exceptionally clean dashboard design incorporates OLED technology for the gauge cluster and three-dimensional displays along the center stack.
Plans for production of such a model have not yet been announced, but we expect Porsche to introduce an all-electric sedan like this. We previously predicted that the 911-inspired, all-electric Porsche sedan could carry a 717 nameplate and arrive in 2019.
