If you’ve ever had a stolen car then you know well the Boy Scout principal: Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

If the car in question was 40 years ago, chances are that you haven’t given up hope as much as you’ve completely forgotten about the hope whatsoever. But, perhaps if that stolen car was a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette it would stay as a niggling nerve bundle in the back of your brain. For the owner of one such car that was stolen, that Corvette has returned home.

Modesto Fleming bought the car, a white 1964 Corvette, and it was taken from her when she lived in Anaheim, California. In 1976.

That same car was then spotted at a car show in 2016, according to the account from CorvetteBlogger.com. Someone noticed that the VIN tag wasn’t for a Corvette. Instead, it was for a 1964 Impala.

Other correct tags still existed on the car and it wasn’t long until it became clear that it was the car from 1976. Don’t look at the current owner, though: he received it as a gift from his wife back in 1987. It was purchased from a now-defunct car lot. That owner has been driving the stolen car for nearly 30 years, but now it’s been returned to Fleming.

We’re happy that Modesto gets her car back. On the other hand, it’s a massive bummer for the person who was enjoying the car for the last 30 years, unaware of the true history of that car.
