Tesla reportedly faces an investigation by the FBI into the possibility that it may have misled investors about its production numbers.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday said that the FBI is now “examining whether Tesla misstated information about production of its Model 3 sedans and misled investors.”
The investigation goes back to early 2017, according to Wall Street Journal‘s sources.
In response to the WSJ report, Tesla told Reuters on Friday that it had not received a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding Model 3 production numbers.
While Musk’s settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission was approved by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan on October 16, the U.S. Department of Justice criminal investigation is still underway.
A Tesla spokesperson told Motor Authority that earlier this year it received a voluntary request from the Department of Justice for documents in regard to public guidance for Model 3 production. No subpoena, request for testimony, formal process, or additional requests have been made.
The criminal investigation, according to the WSJ report, is currently spearheaded by the U.S. attorney’s office in San Francisco.
