Toyota is expanding its TRD subbrand’s presence with a new TRD Off Road trim level for the 2017 version of its popular 4Runner SUV.
Essentially replacing last year’s Trail trim level, the TRD Off Road slots in below the more hardcore TRD Pro package. The differences between the two are in the details, with the Off Road model positioned more for trail use and the TRD Pro designed with dune bashing in mind.
Two 4Runner TRD Off Road grades will be offered—standard and Premium. Building on the entry-level 4Runner SR5, the TRD Off Road models both include Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select traction control system with modes for various kinds of obstacles, Crawl Control, and an electronic locking rear differential. Toyota says it will continue to offer as an option its Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which features beefed up sway bars that automatically disconnect for more off road articulation.
That’s the same equipment included on last year’s 4Runner Trail, but the TRD Off Road is set apart by revised black accented alloy wheels, special badging on the C-pillar, carbon fiber-esque interior trim, and branded floor mats. Opting for the TRD Off Road Premium brings red stitched TRD badges on the head rests in addition to more standard equipment. The outgoing Trail trim level didn’t have any special badging.
The TRD Pro, meanwhile, features its own Bilstein suspension and numerous styling touches.
Toyota has not yet announced pricing for the 2017 4Runner, but we don’t expect the TRD Off Road to climb much over last year’s Trail at $37,615 including destination.
