Volvo builds first prototypes for ambitious Drive Me autonomous car trial

Volvo in 2014 announced an ambitious project that would see autonomous car prototypes handed to members of the public for evaluation.

As part of the project, called Drive Me, 100 of the prototypes, all of them based on the XC90 SUV, would be lent out to participating customers in Gothenburg, Sweden starting in 2017.

Volvo on Friday announced that it had started building the 100 XC90 prototypes.

The prototypes now need to undergo a rigorous testing phase to ensure that the self-driving technology functions exactly as it should. Once this testing phase is finalized they will be handed over to the customers.
