Chevrolet has been out testing a new version of its Camaro on the Nürburgring.
The car is clearly a track-focused model of some sort, leading most, including us, to believe it’s a new Camaro Z/28.
While it was previously thought the car was running the 640-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 found in the new Camaro ZL1, the sound it makes in some video footage suggests there could be a naturally-aspirated V-8 under the hood.
According to Motor Trend, the engine in question is almost certainly a revised version of the 7.0-liter V-8 fitted to the last Z/28. The engine, known as an LS7 to all the fans, has a peak output of 505 horsepower. However, with Ford Motor Company’s [NYSE:F] Mustang Shelby GT350 pumping out 526 hp, we should see Chevy extract a few extra horses for its new Z/28. Motor Trend estimates something between 540 and 565 hp.
Look for the engine to benefit from direct fuel injection, revised cylinder heads and a new cam profile. Similar changes were employed on the LS series of V-8s for their transition to the current LT series, which means the LS7 may end up being renamed an LT7 in its revised form.
The new Z/28 is currently thought to be debuting next year, as a 2018 model.
