2017 Toyota Tacoma Adds Off-Road-Ready TRD Pro Trim

Get ready to get your new truck muddy. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro arrives at the Chicago auto show to provide a big dose of off-road capability for the new midsize truck. The re-introduction of the TRD Pro package comes two years after Toyota first introduced a TRD Pro pack for the outgoing Tacoma at the 2014 Chicago auto show.
The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is a step above the truck’s existing TRD trim level, and is designed for truck owners who will actually take their Tacoma crashing and bouncing around off the beaten track. Available only as a Double Cab model with four-wheel drive and a short bed, the TRD Pro rolls on tough Goodyear Wrangler All-Terran tires wrapped around 16-inch TRD-specific wheels, with the suspension featuring TRD springs with a 1.0-inch lift, Fox internal-bypass shock absorbers, and an electronically locking rear differential.

The TRD Pro comes only with the Tacoma’s 3.5-liter V-6 engine, though buyers can pick either the six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic. The former comes with a clutch interlock-defeat switch for off-roading, while the automatic has Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system with five different driving modes, plus the Crawl Control technology that automatically modulates braking and acceleration on slippery surfaces. (It can also dig the Tacoma out of sand.)

For extra protection, the TRD Pro gets a front skid plate made from quarter-inch aluminum, as well as extra dust boots for the shock absorbers and black plastic fender cladding.

Other visual enhancements for the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro come in the form of LED foglights from Rigid Industries, a retro-style front grille with giant chrome Toyota badging, a black hood scoop, tinted head- and taillight housings, black TRD Pro badges, and a unique TRD shift knob. Color choices comprise Barcelona Red Metallic, Cement, and Super White. Other standard features include navigation, parking sensors, heated leather seats, and blind-spot monitoring. Best of all, you can document your off-road escapades thanks to the Tacoma’s standard built-in GoPro camera mount.

While the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro isn’t as wild an off-roader as, say, a Ford F-150 Raptor, it should still hold its own when the going gets tough. Like the Ram 1500 Rebel, the TRD Pro is designed for people whose trucks spend more time in the dirt than on the pavement.
