You might have seen glamorous photos or videos of the Stelvio Pass, a flowing ribbon of tarmac through the Alps in northern Italy. Now that name will also be used for a new SUV, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne reportedly told journalists the upcoming Alfa Romeo crossover will be named Stelvio.
We initially expected the Alfa crossover by the middle of this year. However, FCA’s latest product presentation slides show a “Mid-size UV” debuting in “2016/17.” Auto Express says the model will arrive in the fourth quarter of this year and go on sale in early 2017.
It’s unclear which Alfa Romeo Giulia engines would carry over to the Stelvio. In the U.S., the Giulia will offer a wild Quadrifoglio Verde model with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 good for 505 hp, as well as a more mainstream model with a 276-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-four engine.
Stay tuned for more on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio over the coming months.
